A caterpillar becomes a butterfly - this flag becomes itself in the same way.

Pastor Laura spoke about the butterfly - caterpillar, cocoon, then the struggle out of the cocoon that strengthens its wings. Without the struggle, there's no transformation.

I thought about painting a literal butterfly, but felt led to this technique instead - ice and dye left to move and melt on their own terms. I laid the dye in a caterpillar shape without quite meaning to. Then the water goes on, and it becomes the Word - living water, soaking through the shape, drawing out wings as the dye runs down the flag in lines I could never have planned.
